Consciousness in Crisis
Consciousness might just be one of the most curiously miraculous phenomena in the universe.
This largely mysterious happening turns us simple, biologically evolving bipedal mammals into complicated beings capable of independent thought, vivid dreaming and wonderous creativity.
Consciousness helps us dedicate our focus to one particular thing whilst idly pondering a myriad of errant thoughts and considerations at any given moment, such as the best procrastination snacks (….Cashews anyone?) or whether I locked the front door when I left my apartment this morning. Fuck, is the iron on? No, idiot, you haven't used an iron since 2019!
Despite being the very thing that makes us aware of ourselves and the world around us, our collective grasp of how consciousness works is shockingly weak.
When as a society we can essentially have the entirety of human knowledge accessible from a device in your pocket, our workable understanding of consciousness is as slippery as a dirty politician.
Whilst bleeding edge neuroscience progresses every day, the nature of how and why consciousness occurs also invites feverish discussion and pontification from theological, philosophical and even mystical circles.
